Udumalpet
town is located abutting the NH 209 (Dindigul – Mysore) Road.
The town is situated at an attitude of 1208 feet above mean sea level
(MSL). The town is well connected by NH, State Highways is with other
nearby Urban centers – Coimbatore, Pollachi, Palani, Dharapuram,
Tiruppur and Dindigul. It is a taluk head quarter and a transhipment
point for railway network. It is connected with Madurai, Rameswaram,
Coimbatore and Palghat by Railway. Udumalpet is also known as “
POOR MAN’s OOTY’ for its enjoyable climate.
Literacy
Rate
Udumalpet town has recorded with a literacy rate of 81% in the year
2001 which is a 6.1% increase from the year 1991. Among the literate
population 51.68% are male and 48.31% are female. Generally, the composition
of female literate among the female population has increased from 68.59%
(1991) to 76% (2001) which is higher than the male literate from 81.03%
(1991 ) to 85% (2001).
Occupational Pattern
According to 1991 Census 33.82% of the total population of the town
constitutes the working force. The Secondary and tertiary sectors were
the major components of the working population accounting for 32.22%
and 60.27% respectively. The primary sector accounted only for 7.81%.
The predominant occupation of the town is trade and commerce activities.
Trade and Commerce, Manufacturing industrial activities and other services
accounts to 27.52%, 24.74% and 23.50% respectively of the total working
force.
Town Profile
Udumalaipettai town is situated at a distance of 559 km from Chennai
and 69 km from Coimbatore, The area of this town is 7.41Sq.km and the
town is Taluk Head Quarters. This town lies on the Dindigul-Mysore National
Highways (NH No.209). The important town around Udumalaipettai are Pollachi
at a distance of 29km in the west and Palani at a distance of 34km in
the east. Being the taluk head quarters, the town extends ever an area
of 7.41Sq.km. and is an important trading and commercial and industrial
centre for cotton, jaggry, rice and other food grains. The town commands
a rich agriculture hinder land fed by the Parambikulam-Aliyar irrigation
projects and is directly linked to Munnar. There are coffee and tea
estates in the western ghats in the neighboring Kerala State.
Infrastructure
Udumalpet town is well connected with Coimbatore, the District Head
quarters and other nearby urban settlements by an articulate system
of railway and road transport facilities. The total length of roads,
streets within corporate limits is about at 83.022km. Consisting of
8.983 km of concrete road, 47,772 km. Of B.T roads and 26.627km of other
types of roads. The National highways NH 209, Dindigul-Mysore road and
two major district roads (MDR) connecting the Udumalpet town with important
urban centers in Coimbatore –Nilgiris Region. The main arterial
road for this town is Dindigul-Mysore Road(NH-209). Udumalpet-Dharapuram
road, Udumalpet-Tiruppur road and Udumalpet-Dhali road are the sub arterial
roads linking with the main west-east arterial namely Dindigul Mysore
NH road. The street pattern with in the town are generally narrow about
83.022 km of roads are within the corporate area and about 9.0 km belonging
to the category of Major District Roads and National Highways.
Agriculture
The average altitude of the town is 1208 feet above MSL. The topography
is undulated and general slope is from west to North. Black clay soil
is the predominant soil of the area. Only 1.25% of land to the total
area of the town is covered under agricultural usage. Mainly coconut
trees and vegetables are grown in this area., where as, agricultural
activities are developed mainly in the hinterlands of the town, wherever
water facility is available, wet crops like paddy, sugarcane, etc.,
are grown in those areas.
Transport
The
town is well connected with rail line and is the the major made of transport
for the town. The National Highway Dindigul-Mysore(NH) is the major
road linking all the surrounding roads to the town is also main way
of transport for the town. The bus stand is also, located along Pollachi-Palani
national Highways and the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation Depot
is located near the bus stand.
