LOCATION :
Located in the
Thiruvannamalai of the state. The town is situated at a distance of
96 kms to the North - East of Chennai and at the intersection
79o35’
eastern longitude and
12o4’
northen
latitude.
River Cheyyar,
originating from the Javvadhu Hills and flowing through the Southern
side in the easterly direction.
Spread over an
area of 10.76 sq. kms. With a population of over 35,201, the economy
of the town revolves around the manufacture of Cotton lungies and
Sarees products.
The hot and
dry climate prevailing in the region has been one of the various
factors contributing to the growth of the hosiery industry in the
town.

Growth of
Thiruvathipuram :
Thiruvathipuram started
off as a small union and became a town with the inclusion of Koda
Nagar,Baruthipuram and Thiruvathur Villages. One of the earliest
activities of the Thiruvathipuram Municipality was the setting up of a
Cotton lungies and Sarees products.

Population Growth Trends
Owing to the rapid
industrialisation, Thiruvathipuram has grown at a rate of 24.51 %
during past two decades. While the overall development patterns
concentrated in the central area, the areas along the northern side of
the River Cheyyar have grown rapidly.

Population density of Thiruvathipuram has been normal increase.
Spread over an area of 10.76 sq. km. the city has a density of 3270
persons/sq.km. With rapid growth of population, the density rose to
2336 persons/sq.km in 1981 and to 2900 persons/sq.km by 1991.

Literacy Rates
Literacy levels of
Thiruvathipuram have always been higher that District literacy
levels. With a total literacy rate of 62.55% in the year 1991, the
city has shown substantial increase to the 40.30% literacy levels in
the year 1971.
3. ECONIMIC BASE
The economy of the town is
concentrated around the Cotton lungies and Sarees products.
In terms of work force,
the participation ratio has increased from 35.80 % of the total
population in 1971 to 37.22% in 1991. Of the work force the
secondary and tertiary sector constitutes 58.12% and 38.14%
respectively.

STRATEGIES
Considering the industrial
character of Thiruvathipuram, Economic development strategies need to
be framed which ensure sensitive, integrated and progressive
development. These strategies will be sustainable in order to create
employment in the Thiruvathipuram Town and to ensure that all
development projects are co-ordinated in a timely and effective
manner.
Thiruvathipuram Municipal

Thiruvathipuram has attracted extensive changes in the development
process. The migration of rural population to the city, conversion of

The industrial land use in 1993 was around 4
% of the developed area and the master plan stipulates a use of around
7.5 % of the developed area by the year 2011.
