Melur
was constituted as a Town Panchayat as per 3.12.1888
St. Joerge Gazette No. 86 and upgrade as Third
grade municipality in the year 1978. As per G.O.
No. 85, date: 1.1.1978. The population of the
town was then 33743. The entire area of Melur
Town Revenue villages Melur and Karuthapuliampatti
was included within the jurisdiction of the municipality.
At present from 22.5.1998 onwards as per G.O.
No.5. Municipal Administration and Watersupply
Department, classified as Second grade municipality.
