The Municipality was constituted in the year 1892 and was subsequently upgraded as Third Grade Municipality from 2004 and upgraded as special grade municipality as per G.O.No.154 , dated 09.08.2010. It has a population of 77800 (2001 Census) and an extent of 20.30 sp.Km., The town is divided into 21 wards.
