LOCATION

     Gudiyatham Town lies at 32 Km west of Vellore Town , the District Head Quarters of Vellore District. Gudiyatham Town is an important urban centre. Gudiyatham town originally named as “ GUDI + YETRAM ” means “ people moving and settling for living ” , latter on mistakely spelled as “ GUDIYATHAM ”

     People from the nearby villages have settled down on the bank of River Goundanya which runs from East to West in the town. These settlements slowly developed and thus formed the present Gudiyatham Town.

     Gudiyatham Town is located at a distance of 40 Km from Chittoor which is District Head Quarters of Chittoor District in the state of Andra Pradesh. Gudiyatham Town is well connected with the Vellore , Katpadi , Chittoor , Palamaner , Ambur by roads and by rail to Katpadi. Two high way roads namely “ Katpadi – V.Kotta high way road ” and Palamaner – Bangalore high way road ” intersects each other in Gudiyatham Town.

     Geographically this town is located at 1200 57 ‘ Northern latitude and 780 52 ‘ Eastern longitude. Population of Gudiyatham Town as per 2001 census is 91376.

TRANSPORTATION LINKAGES

     Gudiyatham Town is connected to the town of Palamaner in Andra Pradesh , Thiruthani , Vellore and Katpadi on the east , Ambur and Krishnagiri on the West , Vaniyambadi and Thirupathur to the South West. The major district roads that interconnect the other urban centers, the minor district roads that connect the smaller settlements and the internal road network with in the town between them assures the residents accessibility to the various parts and various activities of the town.

TEMPERATURE

     Gudiyatham Town being situated at 270 metres above sea level has dry and hot climate. This town experiences little lower hotness and temperature when compared to Vellore , the nearby town which records high temperature during summer season.


RAINFALL

     The average annual rainfall of the town is 920 mm .

NATURE OF SOIL

     The soil of the town is constituted with gravel clay mixed with sand soft rock. The eastern portion of the town has soft rock and red soil. There is an hillock called “ Sedukkarai Hill” in this portion. The central portion of the town is formed mainly with gravel and sand. In the Western and Southern sector the prechainent soil is clay mixed with sank. The Northern portion of the town is framed with hillocks and reserved forests. Pure sand is to be found predominent along the beds of river “ Goundanya ” which traverse through the centre of the town.

LITERACY RATE 

     The literates exclude children in the age group 0 – 6 who are by definition treated as illiterate.  The literacy rate is the number of literates per 100 population of aged 7 + . The literacy rate for Tamil Nadu in 2001 has raised to 73.47 % from 62.66 % as per 1991 census.  The  total literates  in the year 2001 were 64998.  The male literates were 35624 and the female literates were 29374. 

OCCUPATIONAL PATTERN 

     House hold industries like the above have been backbone of all the industries of this town.  The working population constitutes 37.867 of the total population.  Out of this , a majority sector of population constituting about 20.35 % are involved in the manufacturing of non-house hold industry.  Next to this 14.06 % of the population are involved in House hold industry mainly in the field of weaving , manufacturing of beedies and match boxes etc., 

INFRASTRUCTURE 

     Gudiyatham Municipality is privileged to maintain a  “ B  ” class Bus stand and also has one daily market bazaar named as “ Dharnampet Daily Market ”.  It also maintain about 320   shops to boost the commercial activities. 

      Total length of roads maintained in this town is 64.187 Kms.

AGRICULTURE

     Lands used for agriculture constitutes 64.10 % of the total undeveloped area i.e. 99.95 hectares.  Coconut   gardens are the prime agriculture activities.

LAND USE PATTERN

     The central objective of planning land uses is to raise the standard living of the people and to open out to them opportunities for a richer and more varied life.  So, planning of land use is one of the most essential  ingredient  for a town. 

 

EXISTING LAND USE

     Gudiyatham Local Planning Area extends over an area 4.9273 Sq.km, of this developed area is 278.22 hectares and works out to 56.46% of the total area.  The remaining 43.54% of the area remains undeveloped and comprises of lands such as land under water, wetlands, hillocks and vacant lands.  The table gives the land use break up of Gudiyatham Local Planning Area as per approved master plan 1991.  As per Approved Mater plan, Gudiyatham Local Planning Area extends over an area 4.77 sq.km.  Now fresh surveys are conducted and the corrected area is 4.92 sq.km

COMMERCIAL USE
     The main economic activity of Gudiyatham town is commerce.  Major Commercial areas have developed at two places in the town, one on the northern side of the river near Robinson Tank called “Dharnamper Bazaar” and the other on southern side of the river called “ Thalayatham Bazar ” .  There is shandy in the town located near Pernampet road, it meets once in a week and attracts milch or other animals, vegetables and fruits from the surrounding villages. 

      Land under commercial use constitute 25.35 Hectares, which is 7.53% to the total developed area and  5.15% to the total Area of the town.  Earlier in 1983 as per the approved master plan the land   under commercial use was 13.38 hectares i.e.5.62% of the developed area..

 
INDUSTRIAL USE
     Two textile mills situated in the town extension are the major manufacturing industrial units of the town.  Rice mill and other food processing mills are all most equally distributed in the town. Power looms, engineering works and saw mills are also in existence.  Match works and beedi works are the main house hold industries of the town.  Nearly 10,000 people are working in the textile mills.   Land  under this use constitute 24.71 Hectares, i.e. 7.34% of the total developed area.
EDUCATIONAL USE

     There are 5 Higher Secondary Schools, 2 High Schools, 16 Elementary Schools and 8 Private Schools in the town.  The total strength of all these Schools are 7950.  There is a Government Arts College for men and one Polytechnic, and two Private Arts College out side the Municipal boundary on Katpadi Road and Vellore Road.  The Colleges provide education to the pupils in and around Gudiyatham town and for the whole f the taluk in general. 

     Gudiyatham Town is the Head quarter of Gudiyatham Taluk.  The Taluk office, Panchayat Union Office, Munisiff Court are located near the Bus Stand.   Other Government Offices are located in different places in the town and mostly in private buildings. 

     There is one Government Hospital in this town having a bed strength of 130 and a siddha with attached with this Government Hospital.  There is one E.S.I. dispensary managed by the government.

     There are number of temples, churches and Mosques in Gudiyatham Town. Gangaiyamman Koil is famous in Gudiyatham Town, and this temple festival takes place in the month of May every year.  During this festival, peoples from surrounding villages and Vellore District participate.

 
KALYANA MANDAPAMS 
    
     There are Twenty Eight Kalyana Mandapams in Gudiyatham Town.  Most of the Kalyana Mandapam are located along the road side of the residential areas.
CINEMA THEATRES
