About Municipality
In ancient times, the Vanigars
(People who do business) have comedown for settled in this town
hence it was named in the beginning as “Vaniyarbadi”
later on slowly renamed as Vaniyambadi. Vaniyambadi Town is situated
on the bank of Palar River. Leather tanning and leather articles
manufacturing is the main commercial activities of this town. There
are several tannering are situated in and around the Town. The latitude
is 17°.42 and longititude 78°.35. Extent of the town is
9.53 Sq. KM. The town is located at 351.21 Meters from Sea level.
The Municipality was formed by the G.O.
MS. No. 421 Local & Municipality Dept. dated 21.08.1885 by British
Government in April 1886. In 1996 this Municipality was upgraded
to Grade II Municipality by G.O. MS. NO. 118 Rural Development Local
Administration Dept. dated 01.05.1996. In 1998 this Municipality
was upgraded to 1st Grade.
Palar River divides the town in to two
parts. One great flood in the River Palar on 12th Nov 1903 washed
away the town and on rehabilitation of the affected people. New
town was formed. Out of this, Vaniyambadi Municipality has two Towns
in the year 1904. The Special feature of this Municipality is, it
has one separate park for Ladies.
Activities and feature of Municipality.
This Municipality has a Good Water supply
scheme, this scheme commenced in 1974. Now, the improvement on that
scheme is under process the estimate cost of the same is Rs.4.41
core.
Road Maintenance, Garbage cleaning, Street
Light maintenance and preventing the spreading of diseases are important
work of the Municipality.
The Municipality was constituted in the
year 1886 and was subsequently upgraded as I Grade Municipality
from 01.04.1997 It has a population of 85752. (2001 census) and
an extent of 9.53 Sq. Km., The town is divided into 36 wards. The
Municipal council comprising of 36 ward councillors is headed by
Chairperson, who is elected by voters of the town. The councillors
elect a Vice-Chairperson among them.
The executive wing is headed by a commissioner
and he is assisted by a team of officials namely Health Officer,
Municipal Engineer, Town Planning Officer, Manager, Revenue officer
and others.
Vaniyambadi Municipality was constituted on 01.04.1886. The Vaniyambadi
town covers an extent of 954.2031 Hectares of this 446.457 Hectares
are in Urban use and 507.7461 Hectares are in Non-Urban use consisting
of agricultural wet, dry lands and Palar river. This 46.79 % of
total area and under Urban use and 53.21 % to total area are under
non-Urban Use. Available. Dry land for future Urban use is 182.0087
Hectares or 19.07 % to total area. All land under water bodies are
occupied by river, coconut Thoppu and other agricultural activities
are grown in wet land. Vaniyambadi Town is Head Guarter of Vaniyambadi
Taluk.

Location
Vaniyambadi Town is one of major Tanning Center in Vellore District
Vaniyambadi Town is located along National Highways No.46 namely
Madras to Bangalore Road. It is at a distance of 67 kms southwest
of Vellore this town is well connected with adjacent towns Ambur,
Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri.
Vaniyambadi is situated between 78 ? - 35 and 78? - 38 ‘ North
latitude and 12? - 42’ East longitude. The town has an average
elevation of 351.31 metres above M.S.L
